When one thinks about a legal
mind, a graphic designer is surely not what immediately comes to mind.
Nor does a typical graphic designer think about the legal aspects of his/her
profession with fondness. Except for the advertising industry, the
graphic design industry does not have established standards for the
preparation of the legal documents governing the relationship between
the designer and the client. Although the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook
provides various sample contracts that can be used as a starting point in
developing sound assignment contracts, these samples suffer from a lack of
deep understanding of the design process, especially in the more high-technology
oriented fields such as Website and multimedia development.
